A charming place. "La Carbonería"
A Charming place. "La Carbonería".
It is now more than twenty years since "La Carbonería" opened its doors to the world of GO. They share a life from that time, and on Saturday evenings, by the time the hands of its old clock are nearing eight o'clock you will start hearing greetings of old friends and newcomers.
These chats, will soon give way to the clatter of stones on wood boards and occasional talks about a game.
This iconic site in Seville is located in the Santa Cruz quarter, well-known among locals and visitors, and has always stood out for its compromise and support of everything related to culture. Its origins date back to 1975, when Paco Lira reconverted this building of the Jewish Quarter which had been the stables of the palace of Samuel Levi, leading to the resurgence of the avant-garde art movement and at the same time becoming the place to meet for those in the cultural and political scene of the era. Since then, it has been the place for concerts of all kinds of music, but especially flamenco, book presentations, art exhibitions, talks and of course the "La Carbonería" Go Club meetings and the Andalusian Go Association.
Upon entering we admire the fantastic fireplace. The fire in winter will warm up travelers who decide to go there. It is thus advisable a brief stop to warm hands and spirit talking to the owner, Paco Lira, or any of his sons. As we walk on inside, warmth will instead be offered by those playing GO, always willing to teach and provide starting material to outsiders and foreigners, while, maybe, listening the piano music that some spontaneous musician is offering.
Throughout Saturday evening (or until we drop) we can enjoy this fantastic game, either with a few games with one or other player, studying positions, teaching those who go there, etc. But above all sharing the joys and respect for the game of GO and for the place which, for so many years, has been a second home for many GO players who have been there even if only for a few hours.
To paraphrase the poet Elizabeth Escudero, you may say about La Carbonería.“…YET ALAS! YET THERE IS IN THE HEART OF SEVILLA ("TODAY IS ALWAYS STILL") A SHADY PLACE HIDDEN FROM SUNS AND IN SCENT OF RISING MOONS WHERE GOOD COMPANY SHINES: ONE'S LONELINESS IN SHARED REVELRY.”
This is the map:

"La Carbonería", open house, a space, a meeting place, not easily reduced to a tag and is close enough to what would be a marked cultural tavern, permeable to diverse artistic expressions, where perhaps some of their crops, for more than thirty-five years, are the forms acoustic music, photography in its various records, painting in its many games to watch and poetry in their ways more alive.
